Recycling project provides cash boost for hospice

A unique recycling project raised nearly £5,000 to support the work of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Preston Crematorium is signed up to a nationwide scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management, which involves the collection and recycling of metals following cremation.

The profits made are then shared out between participating crematoriums, who in turn choose a charity to benefit from the donation.

This year St Catherine’s Hospice was picked as the beneficiary of a cheque for £4,487 from Preston Crematorium, which will support the care they offer to people facing life-shortening conditions in Preston, Chorley and South Ribble.

Clarke Taylor, Preston cemetery and crematorium officer, said: “The metal comes from things like replacement hips and knees – which are made of expensive titanium – as well as the nails from the coffins.

“It certainly is a more unusual way to raise money, but it is a very successful one. Of course, families and loved ones of the deceased are told about the scheme beforehand and are able to opt out if they wish. But I have not known this to happen during my time in the position, showing how well-received it has been.”

After treatment in a Sheffield foundry, a large proportion of the materials can be used to make new orthopaedic equipment, while the remainder is returned for traditional recycling.

Clarke added: “Not only is the scheme good for the environment, but we are very pleased to be supporting St Catherine’s this year – a well-known and much-loved local charity which does such important work for people facing very difficult times.”

Norman Cutler, senior fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said he was delighted to accept the donation on the charity’s behalf, and added: “This scheme is another example of the many, many ways our wonderful supporters raise money to fund our important work.”
