Pool league and Leyland firm work together to raise £1,000 for hospice

A day therapy patient used his passion for pool to raise cash for St Catherine’s Hospice.
Each season, the Preston and District Pool League – where St Catherine’s day therapy patient Tom Broad was a member – choose a local charity to support, and last year the hospice at Lostock Hall was nominated.
With the support of Leyland company mi Technology, the league raised a fantastic amount of £1,700 – made up of generous donations from players, staff and other local businesses.

Mi Technology, who carry out testing services for the automotive industry, also hold St Catherine’s close to their hearts after Keith Mayor, one of their technician engineers, sadly lost his life to cancer at the hospice.
Simon Wilcock, secretary of the pool league and site services manager at mi Technology, said: “I am happy that we were able to support such a worthy cause and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues in the pool league and at mi Technology for their contribution and efforts.”
Tom, from Hutton, attended day therapy each Friday at the hospice for over a month. He sadly lost his battle against a number of illnesses he was suffering with at the end of December.
Speaking before he died, Tom praised the work of the hospice and said: “We chose the hospice as the season’s charity as it’s a great place, the staff are fantastic, polite and so helpful.”

The league is made up of 900 members in total and has been running for over 25 years.
It receives a tremendous amount of support from local businesses and organisations such as Kingsland Wine, Stephen Hendrys Club, BEST Electrical and New City Taxis.
Tom added: “The season was great fun but at the same time people take it very seriously and there is a real atmosphere on match nights.
“It was great to raise money for a good cause as well as doing something I love.”
