Mick’s memories of an amazing auntie – hospice founder Kitty Sharples

A long-standing supporter of St Catherine’s Hospice has shared his memories of the charity’s founder – his auntie Kitty Sharples.

Mick Higgins said she was always known as ‘Auntie Nelly’ to him and his family when they were growing up in Bamber Bridge.

And he remembers when she first began talking about her vision for a hospice for the local area.

Mick said: “She was a very caring, loving person who always wanted to look after you – as soon as you walked into her house she would be offering you a jam butty!

“She was also a very determined woman and when she first spoke about her dream of setting up a hospice here, we knew it was something she would follow through until the end.”

He said Kitty had been extremely passionate about the hospice cause and would be extremely proud of the organisation which is her legacy today.

“St Catherine’s has grown and grown over the years and I’m sure Kitty would be so pleased if she was here to see the wonderful work it does,” Mick said.

“My family and I have supported the hospice in many ways over the years and it’s great to hear about all the exciting things they have planned to celebrate their 30th anniversary this year. We will be doing all that we can to show our support.”
