Hilda opens up about her wish to be in St Catherine’s Hospice

A highlight of Hilda Quinn’s time at St Catherine’s was a luxurious bubble bath, which she says was “an absolute delight.”

“I’ve never known so much kindness,” she adds. “I’d been in hospital and wasn’t feeling ready to go home, I was too poorly. So I decided that I wanted to be in St Catherine’s.

“On my first day, the nurse Dorothy asked if I’d like a bath. I love having my hair washed and she said I didn’t need to worry about a thing, they would take care of everything and the physiotherapist would help me.

“They took me to this beautiful room with a beautiful bath, and washed me with all of this lovely bubbly stuff! I wasn’t rushed, and it just felt wonderful.”

Mum-of-two Hilda, who worked at the Royal Ordnance Factory in Chorley and has been married to her husband Billy for 66 years, was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer. She’s staying at St Catherine’s Hospice for pain management.

“I’ve visited The Mill café which is top of the scale, and I’ve walked around the lovely grounds,” she says. “When I came to the hospice I felt so safe. The staff are so reassuring and you put yourself in their hands.

“If I’m in pain or feel sick, they sort out my medication and make sure I’m comfortable. The food is wonderful too; I’ve especially enjoyed the lasagne and garlic bread.”
