Cyclists support the first ever St Catherine’s Hospice Big Bike Ride

More than 400 riders got in the saddle to support the first ever St Catherine’s Hospice Big Bike Ride which has been hailed a huge success.
The hospice organised the eventon May 12 for the first time this year and was overwhelmed by the support it received from the local community.

Freddie Fishwick, who took part with pals Peter Kewley and Mark Hilton, was one of the first riders to complete the 50-mile challenge ride in a fantastic time of 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Freddie, from Preston, said: “We’re running in memory of our friend Ian Lloyd who received care at St Catherine’s before sadly losing his battle to cancer this year.
“It was a great event and the route was fantastic so we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

“St Catherine’s Hospice is an amazing place and we’re all keen riders so we were pleased we were able to use our passion to support a local cause.”
Cyclists took part in one of two routes – a challenging 50-mile ride through the Flyde and Wyre Valley, and a fun ‘for all’ 20-mile loop around the Preston Guildwheel.
Lorraine Charlesworth, Director of Income Generation at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “This is the first time we’ve held our very own bike ride event and we were thrilled with the amount of support we received from people.
“The wet weather conditions didn’t seem to dampen people’s spirits and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended.
“Thank you to everyone who participated to support St Catherine’s and raised funds which will go towards providing specialised palliative care to people who are living with conditions that can be treated but not cured.

“It’s been such a success that we’re already excitedly looking forward to organising the event again next year!”
Also among the participants was Jack Stokes – a keen rider and one of the oldest cyclists to take part on the day.
Jack, aged 81, said “I chose to register on the day to support the work of St Catherine’s Hospice.
“I’ve been a supporter of the hospice for many years and often given donations when I can or contribute to collections.”
Jack, who has been cycling for over 70 years and is a member of Preston Wheels and Ribble Valley Cycling Club,said he hopes to take part again next year.
He added: “The event was very well organised and apart from the rain I had a really good time.
“I’ll definitely be taking part again next year if I’m fit enough to be able to.”
